Under the sea

Versace took a dip underwater for their SS21 collection. Donatella said that lockdown and how the world has changed meant that they had to reimagine this collection.

’There can be no re-emergence without prior submergence’, was the theme here. With noticeable reference to the Lost City of Atlantis in the set design. Ruins of pillars and statues eroded from the sea, framed the catwalk giving way to ‘Versacepolis’ being created.

Some key themes from Versacepolis was the continuation of the sea theme into the hair looks. All the models had slicked, shiny, sea hair as if they had just walked onto the shore.

As well as the classic bronzed skin that is key to a Versace show, the bodies were glistening with that wet look. All the visuals reflect the overarching theme of submergence and re-emergence, Versace was plunged to the depths of the sea creating Versaepolis and what emerges is the re-invented collection, with fresh ideas and goals.

Speaking to fresh ideas and goals, Donatella hopes to make Versace completely sustainable, in this collection she used organic and recycled fibres. It would be contradictory to theme a collection around the sea and use virgin plastic fibres. The natural elements; the starfish, and shells give reference to Gianni Versace’s SS92 collection with similar rhinestone bras.

Coral like ruffles and pleats bring an artistic and shapely nautical aspect to the outfits, whereas the navy suiting and scuba pieces provide a more obvious link to the ocean. Versace very much maintained its brand identity, as its key colourways fit perfectly with the colors of coral reefs and the magic wonders of the deep ocean.

Some of the models are sporting bright fuschia lips, another trend I have noticed among collections like Tom Ford and Bora Aksu.
