SS 21 trends

Updated: Nov 17, 2021

With fashion month returning to a new landscape how have designers been influenced throughout the last 6 months?

Here are some of the beauty trends I have picked up on from the shows and look-books broadcasted so far.

Hair through the ages...

Many brands have been inspired by past hair styles going as far back as the 17th century to complete the looks for this season.

FENDI's hair includes sleek standing pin-curls neatly fastened at the back of the head, Sam McKnight references Merle Oberon and hairstyles of the 30's with a modern twist.

Similarly Rodarte have taken inspiration from the 60's with the curler reference and created fascinators resembling curlers and vintage hair nets.

Simone Rocha's collection took inspiration from Nell Gwyn, a mistress of Charles II, dating back to the late 1600's, with sausage curls dropping daintily down the forehead.

Going forward in time, ERDEM have used hair references from the late 18th century, taking inspiration from Susan Sontag's, The Volcano Lover, about Emma Hamilton; this hairstyle sees late 18th century hairstyles combined with Grecian influences.

Finally Collina Strada's hair looks have a more modern approach. Colourful wigs set in curls and swirls give unofficial references to Josephine Baker as the first to lay her hair in such a way. Obviously more recent inspirations come from the Black and Latin community that lay their baby hairs in swoops and swirls. However. from looking up the wig stylist Tomihiro Kono, his inspiration seemed to come from fantasy Japanese creatures from TV shows in his childhood. I hope this brand and stylist also recognise and appreciate the more obvious style references they have chosen from the Black and Latin community.

Masks

As mask culture is becoming a norm and a must, these brands have adopted them into their collections. Creating masks from matching prints, colourful tie dye or even organza?

Bora Aksu had adopted masks in a more artistic style rather than a medically appropriate way. I wouldn't recommend these masks for public use, however in this collection it enables us to see the colourful shades of pink and blue lipstick.

Taking on a safer mask approach, all the other brands have created masks to elevate their looks, creating matching patterns, and telling the world that your outfit doesn't have to suffer whilst wearing your mask. It also suggests that mask wearing culture will be around for a lot longer.

Kingfisher / Peacock Shadow

Smudges and blends of bright colours send references to natures colourful kingfishers and peacocks. Colour matching and colour clashing with outfits, either seems to work!

All around Kohl

Finally 'All Around Kohl' was another noticeable eye look. With variations for a smokey eye or simple black liner.
