Another day another V&A trip...
'Bags: Inside Out' showcases the many forms, uses and styles bags have come in spanning across the globe and time.
Some of my favourite pieces jump from modern to Victorian and sleek to quirky.
Sleek Accessories
These sleek, stylish bags caught my eye. I love the strong silhouettes and unique yet timeless designs.
Historic moments
Seeing how women's bags were changed over the centuries was really interesting. Especially as women have a complicated history in terms of independence, it is amazing to see how bag uses changed in different eras.
For example the first image is a bag dated from Victorian times, it is very extravagant, however you can see that the charms are of practical use; spectacles, a mirror, scissors and a thimble.
In comparison, the third image features a small metal bag with a matching make-up set inside, with barely room for anything else!
Metal work on bags is something we don't always think about, especially now as fast fashion bags and counterfeits saturate the market. The intricate metal work and embroidery seen in the last two pictures is extraordinary.
This exhibition highlighted bag trends, styles and pop culture influences; like Carrie Bradshaw's famous bag moments. However, the most important takeaway was the craftsmanship. I think we forget how much time and skill goes into making high quality bags. This exhibition really inspired me to go and invest in a vintage bag that will be a staple in my wardrobe.
